5k RACE OF HOPE TO DEFEAT DEPRESSION

Pier 25 • Hudson River Park • Turf Field
225 West Street, Manhattan, NY 10013

Sunday, May 21, 2023

Race Start time: 10:00 a.m.

Teens, Families, Friends & Teachers Welcome

THIS RACE IS FOR ALL WHO CARE ABOUT TEEN MENTAL HEALTH

The state of teen mental health across the nation is urgent.  According to the CDC:

  • More than one in three high school students has experienced sadness or hopelessness, a 40% increase since 2009.

  • Every day, almost 4,000 children and teens attempt suicide.

  • Suicide is the second leading cause of death for teens ages 15 to 19.

  • More than half of parents and caregivers express concern over their children's mental well-being.

The Teen Race of Hope has been started by teens for teens to:

  • Educate ourselves about depression

  • Fight the stigma still surrounding depression

  • Fundraise for advanced research on depression

  • Reinforce our connection in school community, because that is a powerful protective factor in future mental health

"Young people who feel connected in middle school and high school 20 years later have better mental health …. are less likely to use substances and are less likely to attempt suicide.  School connectedness is a very powerful protective factor."
-- Dr. Kathleen Ethier, CDC Director of Adolescent and School Health
